It might not be the ‘sleek, black/silver’ device that you’d be proud to display in your car…but the Magellan eXplorist 300 is great for what it is – a rugged, light, handheld GPS receiver. Bear in mind that my testing around the streets of Glasgow wasn’t exactly the wild outback that the device was made for, but I got to see what it could do.

This system is really great for the first time user, or for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money. The Xplorist is a favourite amongst hikers and geocoachers as it will take everything that the British weather will throw at it. For this reason, it doesn’t matter to most people that the street navigation isn’t as developed as others on the market. It also isn’t a concern that the memory is not expandable, as with 16MB built in it is more than most people will need as you can program 100s of waypoints and have room for 100s more.
It also has advanced features like reverse tracking and multiple route navigation, temperature gauge, barometer and electronic compass. One downfall is power consumption – so just remember to take spare batteries with you!
The eXplorist gets a 3D satellite fix quickly, and provides accurate, reliable positioning. It is the ideal device for outdoor types – I know I’m not one myself but my mate who told me to test this one is. He has tried pretty much every outdoor GPS device on the market, and he sings the eXplorist’s praises. So if you don’t take my word for it, take Matt’s!
