According to the New Scientist, Nokia are seeking a patent for a camera mobile phone that will protect you from kidnappers. Triggered by a hidden button the phone pretends to be switched off while actually sending an emergency alert and taking secret pictures, sound recordings and GPS co-ordinates…maybe only for the slightly paranoid among us…but coool!
The panic button sends a pre-recorded emergency message when activated along with all of the images and information to a trusted friend or a service centre. If you lose reception, the phone will store the details including GPS positions and send them as soon as signal is regained. The system can only be switched off by a PIN code.
Unfortunately, since this is only information from a patent application, it’s not very detailed, but another innovative way GPS is being used for help in “everyday” situations (I know kidnapping is more of a special event….but you know what I mean). If anyone knows anymore about it or has any questions, post and I’ll let you know what I can find out.
