Garmin bring GPS to…your wrist?

Garmin have been creating ‘wearable’ GPS for a while now, and their latest outing, the Foretex 101 has all the functionality of handheld GPS devices, along with a big ol’ wrist strap, to keep your hands free. It’s water-proof, durable, and perfect for the ‘outdoor enthusiasts’ among you. Now from the image below you can tell that it’s not the most dainty GPS system ever created…

but in terms of functionality, it has all you need. It has been designed with both hiking and water sports in mind and so has slightly obscure features such as a ‘sailboat race timer’, complete with ‘countdown’ to start. It also has Garmin’s patented TracBack system. Using this you can mark waypoints as you hike, like big trees, campsites etc. then use them as breadcrumbs to trace your route back again when you decide to return.
On top of all these ‘outdoorsy’ features, the Foretex 101 has the usual capabilities you’d expect from a Garmin. Overall, I think it’s a good idea, as even though it isn’t as petite and dainty as I’d like it, it’s still a handy size for outdoor activity people who want to keep their hands free. If it’s ok though, I’m going to hold out until Rakon’s tiny chip gets put into something a little prettier and smaller before I go splashing out on ‘wearable’ GPS…
