Navman have unveiled the Jupiter 30 GPS module, or rather module for GPS integration (emmmm….). As far as I can gather from all the techy speak is that it is a high sensitivity surface mount receiver designed for use in places where GPS signal strength is poor, and where tracking has previously been impossible, inlcuding in shopping centres and multistories.
The technical spec is long and impressive, but I’ve pulled out the parts most people care about…the module has a ridiculously powerful ARM7 processor, integrated SiRF GSC3 chipset, and an average power consumption of a tiny 25mA. So this all amounts to: it gets really fast fixes (less than 1second apparently), in places you couldn’t get them before, and has a really low-power operation level – making it perfect for use in handheld, battery operated GPS systems.
The tiny 4gram unit will be in mass production by the end of this month and will most likely be seen in systems soon after.
