GPS that plays DVDs

This GPS system from Polaroid (the MGX-0550 Portable GPS) is currently only available in the US and you have to wonder if it’ll ever be legal in the UK. The average in-car GPS device is combined with a DVD player, audio CD player, FM radio and Picture viewer to make one wholly distractable system. The GPS spec is nothing to write home about (SiRFStar III, 12 channels, the usual jazz) but it does have an impressive 5.6″ touchscreen to see your movies in full glorious colour. Great multimedia features, but I can’t help feeling that these new systems are sacrificing the navigation for the gimmicks. I’ve more favour for something like the TomTom GO 910, where they’ve worked hard to make the GPS system state-of-the-art, and have added multimedia to that, rather than the other way around. It depends what you want from a system though, and with big names like Navman and Mio producing basic GPS systems for people with less deep pockets, then at least it’s becoming easier to find one that suits you.

(On a side note, if Polaroid have made it - where’s the camera? Now that would have been cool.)
