Wi-fi Talkie's kicking logo...

A new piece of software called “WiFiTalkie” turns your Palm into a Walkie-Talkie, i.e. a free phone.

In a nutshell: when two or more Palm OS devices that are linked to the same network (or the internet) by a broadband connection (e.g. WiFi) they can talk to each other using VoIP technology.

In a techie sorta way: The software supports full duplex mode so you can broadcast and receive voice simultaneously, and can broadcast to two or more devices at the same time (depending on devices and network speed). [...]

KTF lipstick phone

A wee post for a wee phone. KTF, a South Korean manufacturer has unveiled a teeny weeny slider phone. Apparently shorter than a lipstick, the snappily named EV-K130 weighs only 73.5g and measures 8.2×3.7×1.7 cm according to the Register. In this itsy bitsy form it has a 1.3megapixel camera, colour display, mp3 player and 330,000 word Korean-English dictionary (ahem, probably not on the European version…anyway). So, in summary – small, pretty with big features. All I ask for in a gadget.

Available in Korea for around £215 next week.

The stylus and hardware keyboard to become extinct?

Immersion, a developer of haptic technologies has announced that it plans to launch its latest technology – push buttons for touch screens. Anyone who has used a PDA, GPS or smartphone with a touch screen keyboard, knows the difficulties you have. Never quite sure if you hit the button or not, a thirty second text message can turn into a ten minute chore. What Immersion are creating is a sensation that makes you feel like you are pressing down on a button when you touch the icon on screen. The screen feels like it is flexing under your finger, when it’s actually sending a small vibration to your finger.

The Buddy

Well, I asked for it! The girls at Intempo digital have replied to my rant about the “Buddy” pink GPS system, actually the managing director has. They took the time to write to me so I’ve given their reply its own post:

“Please dont be too cross with us! Buddy was designed as a tongue in cheek retaliation against the boring black and silver GPS products on the market.

It was designed by all the girls at Intempo and we didn’t ask the boys opinion even once! At Intempo we believe in bringing technical products out of the jargon age and making them easy to use by just turning them on. We are not implying women cant understand the technical jargon, just that we have better things to do with our time than read a 200 page instruction booklet.”

Fair enough, I agree, but hold my point about it being made in the “simple” department where “techie stuff” isn’t an issue. But they continue…

Philips Logo

The consumer electronic specialists are to begin making GPS systems, beginning with three new products in September. Following Sony’s step into the market back in January, Philips have now reconsidered the idea of Sat Nav that they abandoned seven years ago. The move means that the Dutch company will go into direct competition with their native rivals TomTom, who currently have a huge share of the Navigation market, second only to Garmin.
