While I agree with the desire for creating targeted, measurable advertising, I nonetheless find Mr. Schmidt's comments rather odd. When I drive by a mall or shopping center, will I be inundated with ads from all of the stores I've once shopped at, or from the stores who consider me their "target" customer? I can't envision a world where everything we do revolves around being advertised to. This vision will create a backlash against advertising. Advertisers are "invited" into my car or work when I turn on the radio. But if they try to swoop in on me with GPS tracking and other such technologies, I'll take extra steps to keep them at bay and they'll end up with less access, not more.
