A new piece of software called “WiFiTalkie” turns your Palm into a Walkie-Talkie, i.e. a free phone.
In a nutshell: when two or more Palm OS devices that are linked to the same network (or the internet) by a broadband connection (e.g. WiFi) they can talk to each other using VoIP technology.
In a techie sorta way: The software supports full duplex mode so you can broadcast and receive voice simultaneously, and can broadcast to two or more devices at the same time (depending on devices and network speed). It has functions like a”push-to-talk” switch, and beeps “after transmission” make you feel like you have a real live walkie-talkie. You need Palm OS 5 or higher but the trial version is available from Palm Gear so you can always test it out on your device before you splash out £8 for the full version.
Suggested uses: The kind people at Palm Gear have suggested; a corporate intercom, to coordinate events, to monitor buildings, to coordinate workers or warehouses, to communicate between two moving vehicles or even as a baby monitor.
Maybe not too original or impressive, but really useful and that’s what we like. If this one isn’t for you, why not take a gander at the other free trials on offer on the website and see what your Palm could use.
