Sony’s branch into GPS was recent, but already they’re launching receivers for the PSP, and now for their digital cameras. The company have just announced that they have created a small device that will add location data to your photos. The unit, called GPS-CS1 for their cyber-shot cameras, is only 9cm long, and you’re meant to attach it to your belt and wear it all day as you take photos. Every 15 seconds it records your location and the time, so it can build a record of exactly where the user has been and later match up that data with the time-stamp on the photos using Sony’s GPS Image Tracker software.
The unit runs for 10hours on a single AA battery, and saves up to 15days of data (one month according to some websites, 31MB officially) - perfect for the average Joe’s summer holiday. It’ll be available in the US in September, but a European launch isn’t on the cards yet (what a surprise). Although it’s only definitely compatible with the Sony cameras, it’s meant to work with any others that produce photos in the same format. About $150 it actually costs more than some of the Sony cameras, so is it worth it?
Let me know what you think.
