Acer N50 PDA – a review

The Acer N50 is a wee classic. Not only does it have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Infrared connections, it also has both SD and CF slots. OK, so this doesn’t sound unusual, but then I mention that it is under £130 and suddenly your ears prick up. It is not to shabby looking either. Acer PDAs are always known more for their performance than their looks, but the company have struck a good balance with the sleek little N50.
Spec-wise it has a piddly 128MB internal memory, but with 2 forms of expansion cards, it’s hard to complain about that. It also has 312MHz processor and a beautifully clear touch screen. I can never tell the difference between the 64K and 65,536 colour screens, but the N50 (which has the latter) is really clear, and very crisp looking. This goes well with the SD and CF slots, as most digital cameras accept these cards, and so you can view your photos straight from your camera on the N50′s bigger 3.5″ screen.
Other plus points:
- Small and light
- Two built-in speakers
- Microphone that makes it great for VoIP calling when combined with the Wi-Fi
Negative:
- Not the latest edition of Windows Mobile, although 2003 means it can still be used with older versions of software that Mobile 5.0 doesn’t support. So depends on your views.
Overall? Big thumbs up. It’s light, pretty and does everything the big bulky PDA does for a third of the price. Go team Acer.
