Back in November we had a hint of the Treo ‘Lowrider’. Almost a year later, it has been launched. The Treo Lowrider aka 680 is the first of the Palm range to come in a range of colours. Personally, after a year of rumours and development, I think they could’ve come up with some more interesting shades, but at least they tried.
So what’s new? Well, it’s slimmer for a start, and has the more user-friendly Palm OS 5.4 so already you can tell it’s being aimed at less-businessy types. It bears a striking resemblance to the new 700 series, without the antenna. The usual Treo qwerty keyboard’s still there, as well as the 320×320 touch screen. The rest of the spec in a nutshell:
- Quad-band
- Bluetooth
- SD slot
- Digital camera
- DocumentsToGo Professional software (to view and edit Microsoft Office docs and read PDFs)
- music, video and slideshow players
- VersaMail 3.5
- Blazer 4.5 web browser
What it doesn’t feature is 3G or Wi-Fi. A sad oversight, but it will keep the price down. This takes Palm Treo launches this year up to FOUR. It’d be good to see a few PDAs amongst all those smartphones. I know that smartphones are the fastest growing market by far, but one amidst all these options wouldn’t go amiss.
What do you think? Are you tempted to get one? Let me know.

Without WiFi this isn’t a lot of good to me. I don’t want to be making phone calls when I’m within range of my home WiFi access point or customer ones that we install… and therefore know the pass keys for.
Since I already own a Treo 650, no, it doesn’t tempt me since it’s got much of what I already have. But, if I didn’t own a Treo, I think that I would be tempted. The lower price and the vibrant color choices certainly are something that’s different. I think Palm did a good thing with this, and it looks ike it’s getting the attention that it wants. A lot of sites are picking up on this news, compared to previously and that’s a good sign. I hope that this will turn things around for Palm.
