Palm has paid US$44m for a perpetual licence of Palm OS from Japan’s Access, which acquired PalmSource — Palm’s spinoff that owned Palm OS — last year. The agreement means Palm can modify the source code, and effectively commits the company to produce handhelds running Palm OS in future. The Treo 680 was released only a couple of months ago, but since there have been four Palm product launches this year, I think we can look forward to many more new Palm OS-based phones to be released next year.
