You’ve shelled out big bucks for a top of the range GPS unit, you have all of the software and accessories you think you might need – now you’re set to go, right? Well, maybe is the answer to this question, depending on how you like to use your GPS device. Before you set off on that trip, you may wish to consider the various options for mounting your GPS unit.
In many cases, your GPS will come as a full out of the box solution, including several accessories, as well as the all important mount to enable you to position your GPS in an easily viewed location. For the casual GPS user, the standard suction mount should prove to be a more than adequate solution, and is a convenient and easy way to attach your GPS to your windscreen or dashboard.
If you are a heavy GPS user however, or if you are likely to be traveling over rough, or off-road terrain, then you may wish to invest in a sturdier mounting solution. Problems can sometimes arise with traditional suction mounts when it comes to security and stability of mounting, which have been known on occasion to simply detach from the window leaving the driver with a potentially dangerous distraction, or worse still, a £150+ GPS unit flying out of an open window. Obviously then, for harsher driver environments, or where a GPS unit is used heavily, a more secure attachment method would be worth a look.
Dutch company Carcomm specialise in the manufacture of a number of GPS, PDA and Smartphone accessories and are renowned for the quality of their products. They also produce a highly popular range of GPS cradles for in car mounting. Custom fitted to each device using injection moulding, the Carcomm range of navigation cradles fits each device to millimeter precision providing a high quality, sturdy, and reliable solution for mounting your GPS device.
The beauty of Carcomm’s range of cradles is the convenience. By attaching the cradle to your vehicle via a vehicle specific safety clip, you can quickly and securely slot your GPS into place whenever required. If you want to remove the mount, you can simply disconnect the clip and stow the mount away to remove all evidence of your GPS rig. The ability to remove all evidence of GPS ownership is of particular relevance in a day and age where GPS related vehicle break-ins are at an all time high. Indeed, this can be a particular problem with suction mounts, where thieves often use suction ring marks left on windscreens to target vehicles for potential break-ins.
Another handy feature of the navigation cradle is the ability to charge your GPS directly from the cradle. This can be achieved either through via a single cable output which splits into a cigarette lighter plug which supplies the 12V/24V power to the cradle.
If you own a PDA or Smartphone, Carcomm’s range of cradles can also add extra functionality to your device. With the simple addition of navigation software and a GPS receiver (connected via your cradle’s PS/2 connector) you can create your own GPS navigation set up via your cradle. This could prove an extra attractive option to those who prefer all in one solutions.
Carcomm cradles offer a fantastic mounting solution if you are constantly on the move and need a more stable and secure option. Available from most major retailers, they represent an excellent investment for the frequent GPS user.
