TomTom recently demonstrated their new navigation software in combination with a specially designed car kit for the iPhone at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on June 8th, 2009.

The TomTom navigation application for iPhone is an Apple version of TomTom’s award-winning turn-by-turn navigation software, and includes IQ Routes and the latest maps from Tele Atlas, whilst the specially developed TomTom car kit for iPhone provides secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.

Available via the Apple iTunes App Store, the TomTom navigation application for iPhone will be available following the release of Apple’s OS 3.0 operating system. Details regarding pricing and availability for both the application and the TomTom car kit for iPhone will be released later this summer.

TomTom have announced that the TomTom XL IQ Routes will be the next range in their product lineup to feature the acclaimed LIVE Services. Previously only available on the premium TomTom GO x40 range, LIVE services provide real time premium services such as High Definition Traffic, up-to-date mobile safety camera locations, local search with Google and Live fuel prices.

TomTom have just released the latest map updates, version 8.30, for their full range of sat nav products.

Based on the January Tele Atlas release, the new maps reflect numerous updates in the road network, including thousands of kilometers of new roads, cross roads and Points of Interest across Europe and North America.

Given that that an average of 15% of the road network and 20% of the Points of Interest change every year, using the most up to date maps guarantees users an accurate, simple, safe and stress-free navigation experience.

The updated maps can be purchased as a download via TomTom HOME - TomTom’s free software application that enables users to manage, download, store and transfer content from their computer onto their TomTom device - or from the TomTom website via www.tomtom.com.

For users who have recently purchased a new TomTom device, it is also worth checking whether your device is eligible for TomTom’s Latest Map Guarantee by connecting to TomTom HOME. The Latest Map Guarantee entitles you to one free map download via TomTom Home if a newer map becomes available during the first 30 days from when you first start using your device. TomTom recently released the latest software updates for the TomTom GO x20, x30 and x40 ranges. Navcore version 8.350 includes all of the latest bug fixes, as well as improvements and new features to extend the functionality of your device.

Most notably, this latest software release allows users to re-enable the transmission of routing instructions to a car stereo via the built-in FM transmitter. This feature was disabled in previous software versions due to new legislation making it illegal to occupy an unused FM frequency with an intermittent audio transmission (such as occasional voice instructions). Navcore version 8.350 circumvents this issue by allowing the transmission of voice instructions only when MP3 music is simultaneously transmitted alongside voice instructions, thus producing a continuous audio stream.

The latest software release also includes improvements to the phone book transfer feature, enhancing the existing functionality which allows users to navigate to address book entries, as well as new “indicator markers” on the “Browse map” and “Navigate to…” screens showing the direction and distance as the crow flies to your home, present location, current destination and a pre-settable marker.

A recent research survey conducted by VisitEngland has revealed that around one in five of those who took an overseas holiday last year are considering taking a holiday in the UK this year.
