If you don’t currently own a tomtom sat nav, or are thinking about buying one and want to test out some of the features, then you might want to take a look at TomTom’s free online route planner.

Available since December 2008, the web-based route planner gives free access to detailed traffic information throughout Europe and incorporates TomTom’s IQ Routes, which calculates the fastest route to a destination and provides accurate travel times, and IQ Routes, which is based on collective travel time experience of 30 million TomTom users. The Route Planner also serves the latest maps, which are  made available via TomTom-approved Map Share updates.

“The TomTom Route Planner is growing much more quickly than expected. We are pleased that users visiting the Route Planner have given it a high rating and that we have been rated ‘Best web-based Route Planner’”, says Corinne Vigreux, managing director of TomTom. “The Route Planner demonstrates to current and potential users of our navigation products that they can rely on TomTom when it comes to fast and accurate routing.”

The Route Planner not only offers the ability to calculate travel routes based on the latest TomTom data, it also allows users to test out the features available on TomTom’s latest sat nav devices before deciding to buy. The only devices to feature IQ Routes, advanced lane guidance and Map Share  functionality, all in one device, are the TomTom GO x30 range and above, the ONE V5, and the ONE XL V3 – all excellent devices, but a little pricier than models without these features. With a number of cheaper sat nav alternatives available, testing the advanced features of these devices can be useful when deciding which type of device would best suit your needs.

TomTom Online Route Planner Now Available in all Major European Countries

TomTom today announced that their award winning online route planner is now available throughout Europe.

The free service has been available since December 2008 and takes advantage of HD Traffic, TomTom’s live traffic information system, which takes feedback from devices currently out on the road to calculate the quickest route, and IQ Routes, which calculates routes and travel times based on historical travel time information for every road, specified for every day of the week.

Utilising these core technologies, TomTom’s online planner can plot different routes depending on the day and time of the journey, based on average road speed data collected by TomTom. A journey across Glasgow during rush hour, for example, will take advantage of quieter back streets, whilst the same journey on a Sunday morning is more likely to take major roads across the city. The online planner also adapts your route to avoid any current traffic issues, providing the most efficient route for the current road conditions.

“The TomTom Route Planner is growing much more quickly than expected. We are pleased that users visiting the Route Planner have given it a high rating and that we have been rated ‘Best web-based Route Planner’” says Corinne Vigreux, managing director of TomTom. “The Route Planner demonstrates to current and potential users of our navigation products that they can rely on TomTom when it comes to fast and accurate routing.”

The Route Planner is due to undergo further expansion in the coming months, and will be made available to more countries around the globe, and in more languages.
